<Kansong Art Museum>, the first private museum in Korea is located within walking
distance from Han Sung Womens’ High School. Gan Song, artist Jun Hyung Pil was a
millionaire who spent his whole life in preventing our cultural artifacts from being
smuggled into overseas with his own fortune. There are various quality collections at
Kansong Art Museum and will have exhibitions for only 2 weeks in Spring and Fall,
respectively. This will be a must for you to visit and explore.

Spring Collection ' plum-blossom, orchid, chrysanthemums and bamboo
exhibition']
    Ever since the ‘plum-blossom, orchid, chrysanthemums and bamboo exhibition’ in Fall of 1976 and the ‘Orchid and Bamboo exhibition’ in Fall of 2005, it is the biggest for a ‘plum-blossom, orchid, chrysanthemums and bamboo’ exhibition.

“There were opinions that it should be a exhibition that can review the whole field of art and
accordingly we selected the best works which represent each period of the plum-blossom,
orchid, chrysanthemums and bamboo works of our museum.”
    Along with 3 orchid works of Chusa Kim Jung Hee (1786~1856) who was not only a master in
calligraphy but also in epigraphy, poetry, Chinese classics, and Buddhism, there were works of
‘plum-blossom, orchid, chrysanthemums and bamboo’ by his apprentices laid out. You can
compare the works of the master and his apprentices. 
    The orchids and plum-blossom works of Chusa are pictures that look as if it was written in plain
writing. He shows the ideal peak of work that makes academics and art equal. The influence of
Chusa follows through into Sukpa Lee Ha Ung (1820~1898), the Prince Heungsun Daewongun and
Unmee, Min Young Ik (1860~1914). You can even see ‘plum-blossom, orchid, chrysanthemums
and bamboo’ works of the 20th century which was made from Unmee Min Young Ik’s chid/bamboo
method.
     Danwon Kim Hong Do (1745~?), one of the members of Picture Community, had his work of
‘White plum-blossom (白梅)’ with its style of a literary artist. Compared with other works of different
artists, it is full of actual painting. Choi Wan Su, the head of the research center quotes “Danwon
who was beloved by Jungjo had pride of a literary servant”.
     Five works of Taneun Lee Jung (1554~1626) who was acclaimed as the best artist in China-ink
painting in the 500 years of Chosun Dynasty will be exhibited as well. Regarding Lee Jung’s  ‘Wind
bamboo(風竹)’, senior researcher Baek In San quoted “As this picture was made from the best
China-ink painter in history, it can be called the best China-ink painting in history” While Taneun
was the master in China-ink painting, in the field of China-ink for plum-blossom, Eu Mong Ryong
(1566~1617) is the best. You can also see a work of China-ink plum-blossom from Eu Mong Ryong as well.
     From the works of Hyunjae Shim Sa Jung (1707~1769) who was very good at ‘plum-blossom,
orchid, chrysanthemums and bamboo’, the chrysanthemums picture outstands. It is estimated to
be the oldest picture of its kind in Korea.
     Among his works from this exhibition, there are lots of bamboo paintings along with plum-
blossom, orchid and chrysanthemums.
     Choi Wan Su, the head of the research center of Kansong Art Museum, quotes “we call ‘Kunja
(君子)’ as a man who sticks to his faith under numerous crisis and we call a plant that weathers all
the challenging environment and keeps its life a ‘plum-blossom, orchid, chrysanthemums and
bamboo’" and "from this exhibition of plum-blossom, orchid, chrysanthemums and bamboo, you
would be able to understand the situation of the era it was in”.
     The exhibition is scheduled till the 29th and it is of free admission.
